Generate Flight Delay Claim Free →Your rights when a flight is delayed are set out in UK Reg (EU) No. 261/2004, known as UK261. The CAA states you may be entitled to compensation if the delay means you reach your destination airport more than three hours late. Amounts run from £220 to £520 depending on flight distance and, for long-haul, the length of the delay.
Under 1,500km: £220 per person. Between 1,500 and 3,500km: £350 per person. Over 3,500km: £260 per person if you arrive between three and four hours late, or £520 per person if you arrive more than four hours late. (CAA published amounts.)
The CAA states that airlines do not have to pay compensation if they consider the delay to be caused by extraordinary circumstances. If the airline relies on that, ask it to state in writing why it says the circumstances were extraordinary and what measures it took.
Claim from the airline first, as compensation is not paid automatically. If you are not satisfied with its final response, or it takes more than eight weeks to reply, you can escalate to an Alternative Dispute Resolution provider if the airline is signed up to one, or to the CAA's Passenger Advice and Complaints Team (PACT) if it is not.
